Santa Cruz Bicycles Recalls Electric Bicycles Due to Fire Hazard

Recall Summary

Name of Product: Santa Cruz Bicycles Heckler 9 ebike

Hazard: The recalled e-bike lithium-ion battery can pose a fire hazard.

Customers should immediately stop using the ebike and disconnect the battery from the ebike and charger until they have checked if the battery is affected.

Remedy: Replace battery

Description:  

In cooperation with product safety regulators, Santa Cruz Bicycles is conducting a voluntary Safety Recall of certain Heckler 9 ebikes because in some cases their lithium-ion batteries can pose a fire hazard.

The potentially Affected Products are certain batteries installed in certain Santa Cruz Heckler 9 ebikes. The recall only affects the batteries of Heckler 9 ebikes if (a) the bicycles were manufactured before February 2023 and (b) they contain certain lithium-ion batteries.  The recall only involves the Heckler 9’s battery, and only some batteries are affected.

Affected Heckler 9 ebikes come with an interchangeable 720WH battery that sits inside a black case under the frame. “SANTA CRUZ” is printed on the sides of the downtube of the bicycle frame, “Heckler” is printed on the top tube of the frame and on the inside of the left chainstay. The ebikes in which the Affected Products may be installed were sold in Gloss Avocado Green and Maritime Grey. Please see the photo below.

What You Should Do

Stop Use:  Immediately stop using the Heckler 9 and disconnect the battery from the ebike and charger.

Check if the Battery is Affected:  

  • Remove the battery from the ebike 
  • Use a 4mm allen key to turn the latch clockwise a quarter turn, or until it clicks. Then use a finger to undo the safety latch. Battery should be released. Instructions HERE
  • Identify the battery serial number [see photo below].

Serial Location
  • Check to see if the battery is affected using the battery serial number look-up tool
  • If you have difficulty removing the battery, take the bike to a local Santa Cruz dealer and have a professional mechanic remove the battery. The shop will commence the identification process for you. 
  • Find a local dealer HERE
  • If the battery is not affected, you can go back to riding.

What to Do if a Battery Is Affected:

  • Contact SCB Rider Support using the webform linked below or via phone (if your country telephone number is noted below) to register to receive a replacement battery when one becomes available.  The SCB Rider Support team will contact you when the replacement battery is ready to ship.  Please contact SCB if you have sold or gifted the ebike to another person and forward this information.

Battery Disposal: Please dispose of affected batteries in accordance with local requirements.  Do not put them in household waste.

*Remember to remove the downtube cover before disposing of your battery as you will need the cover when you receive your replacement battery.
