Santa Cruz Bicycles Recalls E-Bikes Due to Fire Hazard

Recall Summary

Name of product: Santa Cruz Heckler 9 ebike

Hazard: The lithium-ion battery on the recalled Heckler 9 e-bike can pose a fire hazard.

Consumers should immediately stop using the e-bike and disconnect the battery from both the e-bike and the charger until they have checked if the battery is affected.

Remedy: Replace battery

Description:

In cooperation with product safety regulators, Santa Cruz Bicycles is conducting a voluntary recall of some Heckler 9 e-bikes because in some cases their lithium-ion batteries can pose a fire hazard.

Potentially Affected Products are some batteries installed in certain Santa Cruz Heckler 9 e-bikes. The recall only affects Heckler 9 e-bike batteries if (a) the bikes were manufactured before February 2023 and (b) they contain certain lithium-ion batteries. The recall only involves the Heckler 9 battery, and only some batteries are affected.

Affected Heckler 9 e-bikes come with a removable 720WH battery that is housed in a black casing underneath the downtube. “SANTA CRUZ” is printed on both sides of the e-bike’s downtube, and “Heckler” is printed on the e-bike’s top tube and on the inside of the chainstay. E-bikes in which the affected products may be installed were sold in gloss avocado green and maritime gray. See photo below.

What to do

Stop Use: Immediately stop using the Heckler 9 and disconnect the battery from both the e-bike and the charger.

Check if battery is affected:

  • Remove the battery from the e-bike
  • Use a 4mm Allen key to turn the latch a quarter turn clockwise or until it clicks. Then, use a finger to disengage the safety latch. The battery should be released. Instructions HERE
  • Identify the battery serial number [see photo below].

  • Check if the battery is affected using the battery serial number search tool found on the SCB recall page
