World Cup Val Di Sole

World Cup 2019 - Val Di Sole

8月 05 — 2019 | Val Di Sole, Italy

Three weeks since Les Gets and the Syndicate was back between the tape in Val Di Sole. This is a steep, rough, and technical track as is, then add a healthy dose of rain and the Black Snake becomes an untamable beast. There's always drama here and this was the gnarliest race in Val Di Sole to date, slippery and greasy in sections while grippy and loamy in others and straight-up rough from top to bottom. Greg, Loris, and Luca had to take chances and make efficient line choices while managing the inconsistent track conditions. By the end of the weekend, the Syndicate would deliver all three riders into the top 20.

Loris Vergier3rd4th overall
Greg Minnaar7th7th overall
Luca Shaw19th17th overall

Much like last year, qualis were wet, really wet. The skies opened and started dumping rain creating an unpredictable and slippery track just after the elite men started their qualifying runs. The muddy and chaotic conditions had results all over the place. Greg qualified 22nd, followed by Loris in 27th, and Luca in 106th. Fortunately, all three made it into finals unscathed.

Wet and wild during qualis

After a dramatic day of qualifiers, heavy rain continued throughout the evening but by the morning of finals the clouds cleared and it was still anyone’s game.

Luca has finished in the top ten twice in Val di Sol over the last couple of seasons and is still on the hunt for strong results since starting the season out with an injury. The Dinoshaw was on track and down by two seconds at the first split but slipped up somewhere between the second and third split and lost another two seconds. Not one to give up, Luca charged through the lower half of the track pulling back a second for a strong finish. He crossed the line in 19th on the day.

You’d be crazy to bet against the French on any given weekend this season, fortunately for us, we have a French weapon of our own. Loris Vergier had a crash here last season and was looking to set things straight and claim his first win of the season. Speed and consistency have been his strong point all year and finals were no different. His split times were green the entire way down, only losing a small amount of time in the technical rocky section. Loris slotted into third on the day making that three straight podiums for the Frenchman.

Three trips to the podium in the last three races for Loris.

Minnaar was the next rider in the start house after Vergier and true to his style was putting together an extremely fast and smooth run gaining nearly a second by the third time split. The G.O.A.T. kept attacking but as he approached a technical, rocky right-hander he lost his line and hit the ground costing him nearly three seconds. A time difference that would have landed him on the podium. Greg made the best of the situation and kept charging to a top 10 finish, landing in 7th overall on the day.
