On and on and on and on...

Danny MacAskill just doesn't stop talking about riding ebikes. And when he's riding he goes and goes and goes. Which is partly why we've made the Heckler go further, higher and faster. The Heckler has a huge interchangeable battery (720Wh), which allows riders to access previously unreachable trails, unlock less-used trails and cramming more into less time. The 150mm rear travel (with 160mm travel fork up front) of VPP™ suspension has been tuned to tame big trails on big descents and provide glue-like traction on the climbs. The Heckler has both mixed or dual 29-inch wheel size options and a full range of frame sizes from small to XXL.

Heckler 9 Frame Render

Frame Sizing

If you're on the cusp between the recommended height range of two sizes, the absolute best thing is to try to ride them both. At a minimum, check the stack/reach measurements on your current bike and compare it to the new model you are looking at to get an idea of a fit you are already comfortable with. If riding the bike is not an option, consider the following.

Please note, the Small frame comes with 27.5" wheels only.

The Heckler MX is available in sizes medium - extra extra large (M-XXL).

The Heckler 29 is available in sizes medium - extra extra large (M-XXL).

Personal Preference

A larger size frame will be more stable, and will give you more room to move without upsetting the weight-balance of the bike. The larger size will put the front wheel further in front of you, which gives the feeling of security and conversely, it will require more significant body movements when you WANT to shift the weight-bias of the bike. Think hard about your riding style and how active/intuitive you want it to be vs stable and speedy. You'll need to work a bit harder to muscle the larger bike around.

Body Dimension

Not all bodies at a given height are the same. If you have longer legs and a shorter torso than the average person your height, that may push you towards the smaller of the recommended sizes. If you're all torso and arms, most likely you'll want to size up.

FAQ's

What size tire will fit?

Heckler 9 is optimized for 2.4" tire (29 or 27.5 depending on your bike), but can run up to a 2.6. Keep in mind though, tire changes will affect BB height, geometry, and maximum assist speed calculations.

Can I convert my MX to a 29 or vice-versa?

The two wheel sizes use completely different swing arms and lower links, and we don't sell those separately from the bike.

Where can I find additional technical information about my Heckler?

Check out the ebike tech page, Shimano STEPS, and the bike archive for more information. Also check the Shimano and battery manuals that came with your bike.

What's the battery range?

The battery capacity is 720 Watt Hours. Many factors determine range; weight, location, gradient, mode your riding in, ambient temperature, etc.. We suggest using the range function on the display unit for the best estimate.

What is the battery capacity?

720Wh

Can I ride without the battery?

No - the cover is attached to the battery so if you take the battery out you'll have a gaping hole in your downtube.

Is Heckler compatible with any other batteries?

Nope, this 720Wh battery is specific to Heckler 9.

Does the Hecker have an ebike fork?

Yes - all forks we spec on the Heckler are ebike compatible.

Do I need any special tools to work on my Heckler on the trail?

This bike uses Shimano STEPS for the drive unit so no special tools are needed. You may want to add a Di2 tool and 4mm for battery removal to your toolkit though.

What is the recommended fork?

Our geometry is designed for a 160mm fork with a 44mm or 42mm offset, except size Small which uses a 37mm 27.5 fork. You can run a longer fork, but it does affect the geometry, since the bike was optimized for the fork we specified. Save the dual crown fork for your V10, Heckler isn't compatible.

What's the difference between two displays?

E7000 has a black and white screen and is slightly smaller than the EM800. The EM800 display is larger, has a color screen, backlight brightness adjustments and a power assist indicator (graph)

Can I mount a chainguide to my bike?

Yes, but only the E13 LG1+ 34t Shimano STEPS one we spec.

Is the system waterproof?

The Shimano STEPS System is water resistant and our frame is designed to drain water. However we don't recommend power washing any of our bikes.

What happens if the system loses power?

The bike can still be pedaled without the battery/motor active. If the loss of power wasn't due to fully draining the battery, contact customer service.

Can I connect a light or other accessory to my bike's battery?

Yes, Shimano supplies two ports on the drive unit to support Shimano or Shimano approved accessories. Please refer to the Shimano manual that came with your bike to set up your accessories.

Can I update the firmware myself?

Yes, detailed firmware update instructions are located on the Shimano STEPS app or software.

How do I connect my device to Steps via Bluetooth?

Detailed Bluetooth connection instructions are located in the Shimano manual included with your bike, or on the Shimano STEPS app.

Can I fly with my ebike?

Current TSA regulations can be found here.

Where is my ebike's serial number located?

The serial number on our emtb's is located on the frame, behind the lower link above the motor. Feel free to reach out to Rider Support With any questions

Can I run a longer stroke shock on my bike?

No, using a longer stroke shock could damage the frame.
