Santa Cruz Bicycles

Strongest wheels on the market.

Five years ago, a little Santa Cruz video on a bike website debunked every skeptic's fear about the long-term durability of carbon fiber bicycle frames.

Now we are doing the same for wheels. Santa Cruz Reserve wheels are built on the highest quality carbon rims on the market. Our confidence in the design and strength of our wheels is backed up by a lifetime warranty, just like our frames.

  • Available in four wheel sizes, six rim widths, and three hub choices: DT350, black i9 Hydra, or satin black Chris King ISO Boost.
  • Reserve wheels are now stock spec on XX1 and XTR models
  • You can also order Reserve wheels as an upgrade on carbon S and X01 Santa Cruz and select Juliana Bicycles models or aftermarket for any bike in your garage

Reserve 37 wheels offer the widest range of choices. The 37s are optimized for tires from 2.5 to 2.8 inches wide, and will still support a 3.0 nicely.

After testing to find the perfect balance of width and wheel size, we’re helping you grow your rubber fetish just a little more—the Reserve 37’s now available as a 29er, too.

Reserve 700c and 650b. Gravel riding offers a bit of roll-your-own style, but these types of races and rides favor lightweight over bump absorption, so most opt to leave the suspension at home. This is where the new Reserve 700c and 650b wheels really shine.

Tech Support

Can individual front and/or rear wheels be purchased separately?

Yes. Sometimes weird things happen. Wheel flew off your roof rack never to be seen again? We don't want to make you have to buy two wheels when you just need one. Just let your dealer know which wheel you need and we'll get one out to them.

Do you recommend or advise against using a tubeless aid system such as Schwalbe Pro Core with the Reserve wheels?

Sure, you can run those types of tire systems with the Reserve rims if you want to. They add weight, but they do also add some protection. We have seen good results with Pro-Core in our wheel test lab.

Reserve 37s look awesome—tell me more, and what about 2.6-inch tires?

The new Reserve 37’s width (37mm internal) is optimized for tires from 2.5 to 2.8 inches wide, and will still support a 3.0 nicely.

There's a new Chris King hub option? What's the story?

We're excited to offer Reserve rims laced to longtime Santa Cruz Syndicate partner Chris King's hubs. The team put these to the test at the World Cup DH in Croatia this season.

You can order Chris King hubs laced to 25, 27, and 30mm width rims (right now), and they're available in any color you like, so long as it’s black.

Built to order in our factory in Santa Cruz, California, they carry the same lifetime warranty as our other Reserve wheelsets.

What is the engagement amount of the stock hubs you spec on your Reserve Wheels?

Our i9 Torch hub that ships with gravel wheelsets have 120 points of engagement.

Our i9 Hydra hub that ships with MTB wheelsets have 690 points of engagement.

Our DT350 hub has 36 points of engagement.

What is the ERD on my Reserve 30 wheels?

To determine your Reserve 30 rim's ERD, reference the rim designation on the inside of the rim next to the serial number.

What kind of components do you use to build Reserve wheels?

We've always taken great pains to use readily-available, standard parts on our bikes, and our rims are no different.

J-bend spokes, mechanical-lock nipples (that you can access without taking the tire and rim strip off), and hubs from DT Swiss, Industry Nine, and Chris King make building good wheels easier for us, and maintaining the wheels or finding spares a lot easier for you.

What parts of the wheel are warrantied by Santa Cruz?

Santa Cruz warranties the components we manufacturer - Rims.
For a hub specific warranty issue you would want to work with the hub manufacturer (I9, Chris King, or DT Swiss) for warranty assistance. Your dealer should be able to help you with this.

What's with the raised square-shaped area around the spokes?

That's material right where you need it. With information from testing in our carbon lab in hand, we set about determining how we might design a rim to mitigate those failures, and part of the result is the square-shaped reinforcements you can see around the spoke holes.

You can read more about that here.

Will there be non-boost Reserve wheel options for older or non Santa Cruz models?

Currently we only have Boost hub options (110x15mm Front & 148x12mm Rear) as this is the same as our OE Reserve upgrade spec on current generation new bikes. We do plan offer a Reserve rim-only option in the future for dealers and end users to custom build up older/different hub options.
