NZ Enduro Day 3 - Wakamarina
We woke at 0545 to the sound of torrential rain ... and wondered if we could do another day in the mud. We got ready and headed out the door to Canvastown where staging for the final day of the 2016 NZ Enduro was taking place.
As we arrived riders were huddled under gazebos sheltering from the rain and the whispers started ... they are canceling the day. And sure enough 10 minutes after arriving Sven Martin called us all together and explained the situation.
Wakamarina is over 1000m above sea level and the wind howls across Fosters Clearing at the top - and given the low cloud and pouring rain the low temperatures would only be exaggerated up there while waiting for stage starts or marshaling the day.
Added to this there are numerous river crossings on the stages and subsequent liaisons which could very well be in flood come the time we needed to cross them. And finally - as the route is a point to point far from any roads, never mind major roads, evacuation would be a long arduous affair.
So with cheers from the riders, Sven and Anka put rider and volunteer safety first and cancelled the day and let the results stand from the end of day 2.
I asked our riders to sum up the race in just 3 words:
A huge thanks to Sven and Anka Martin for putting on amazing race, and for making the call to cancel the third day for rider and volunteer safety. We can't wait for the 2018 race, but for now, it's on to Rotorua for Crankworx!
