With the U.S. Pro GRT series approaching, Santa Cruz Free Agents Kiran MacKinnon and Max Morgan have been working hard together to get prepared for the season ahead. The first race of the series took place this past weekend in Port Angeles, Washington at one of the riders' favorite venues.
The team loaded up the Santa Cruz truck and trailer, and hit the road. A quick overnight in Eugene, Oregon, and they rolled into Port Angeles eager to get riding. They linked up with felow Santa Cruz rider Sean Bell for course walk on Thursday, and it was looking dry and dusty. After track walk, everyone pitched in to get the pit area set up and the bikes ready for the first day of practice.
The weather took a turn directly before qualifying on Saturday, and with some rain, the course was quite slippery. Kiran ended up qualifying in the 3rd position and Max in 7th.
Everything was looking good for, but both Kiran and Max crashed during the finals in the exact same turn. Max was able to salvage a 12th place only 2.9 seconds off of the win, and Kiran made out with 29th. These results certainly don't show the speed that they were riding, but in just two weeks time they'll try again at the second round of the series at Mountain Creek Bike Park in Vernon, New Jersey. Meanwhile, in Junior Pro Men, Sean Bell climbed the third step of the podium!
