Factory Racing Takes Elite Men Overall at Surf City Cyclo-X

November 30 — 2015

2015 is Santa Cruz Factory Racing’s year for dominating the Surf City Cyclo-X series, as team riders Justin Robinson and Scott Chapin took first and second overall in Elite Men.

One of the longest running cyclo-cross series in the country and a favorite among the Bay Area and Central Coast crowd, the four-race series spread throughout Santa Cruz County gave riders a taste of what makes the area a mecca for all things two-wheeled. From sand and ruts to redwoods and run-ups, a little bit of everything was thrown at the athletes. The fourth race, held at the Cal Fire Training Facility in Bonny Doon, CA, featured lots of pedaling and a special cocktail of quick, dusty, loose, rolling terrain. “I mostly felt the bumps in my back,” commented Chapin, who took fifth in Sunday’s race.  “With all those bumps, you have to know how to crank over them and keep yourself from bouncing.”

Despite the course’s rough ride, Justin Robinson was all smiles as he crossed the finish line in fourth place Sunday. “It’s always great to come out for a race, especially when it’s in my backyard,” said Robinson, a Bonny Doon local. “It means a lot to race in front of my friends and family and some fast guys.”

After four solid races together, Robinson and Chapin developed an unspoken routine of working together to pick off competitors and push each other to go faster. “It’s a lot of fun racing with the guy,” Robinson said. “It’s great to be out there and have a wheel in front of you that you can trust; it’s a big help.”

Scott Chapin's crosshairs are never a comfortable place to be.

In addition to his podium visit at Sunday’s race and the overall Surf City title, Robinson also took the Northern California Nevada Cycling Association District Championship title, which counts towards Nationals.

Chris Seymour was also out on the course Sunday, finishing 26th in Elite Men.
