Overview

Same great bike, new smaller wheels.

The Highball is now available in 29” and 27.5”.  You pick. We tried to keep the handling characteristics the same between the two bikes, and let the wheel size’s traits shine through. One difference –the 27.5” version has a size small, while the 29er does not, and that the 29er has an XXL, while the 27.5” does not. On the 29er, we shortened the chainstays by almost a half-inch, and stretched out the front end of the bike by about the same. This allows you to run a more modern stem/bar combo and makes the bike a little quicker in the corners. A lot of folks want to talk about head tube angle when they talk about hardtails, but the 69-degree angle strikes the right balance of quick handling and stability, and won’t wander on you when you’re climbing.

The carbon layup changed a bit, too, particularly in the seat stays and seat tube, and we reduced the seat post size to 27.2mm, which adds some compliance you’ll appreciate when you’re 80 miles in to a 100-mile race. All the cables route internally, now, but that doesn’t mean multiple obscenity-laden nights in the garage to get it set up. Everything has either a tunnel or an easy-to-route cable guide to make it as hassle-free as possible.  This C-level carbon frame offers the same stiffness, strength, and durability of our top-end, CC-level carbon frames, but does so with a little bit more, less-expensive material, which results in a frame weight increase of approximately 280 grams. Outside of the weight, there's no performance difference between the two frames.

The Highball is unapologetically fast, surprisingly fun, and every bit a Santa Cruz mountain bike.

Everything has either a tunnel or an easy-to-route cable guide to make it as hassle-free as possible. This CC-level carbon Highball has been trimmed, optimized, and strengthened to provide the very best performance we could engineer into a hardtail, and does so at a fighting weight that's about 280 grams less than the C-level Highball.

The Highball is unapologetically fast, surprisingly fun, and every bit a Santa Cruz mountain bike.

Tech Info

What is the torque spec for the seat collar?

We don't provide a torque spec for the seatpost, because it really depends on what seatpost you are using. Some seatposts are slippery, and require more torque to stay put, and others are very thin- and can be crushed by overzealous tightening. Some are both slippery and thin... Make sure you use the Carbon Assembly Compound included with your frame, and use some common sense.

You will not damage your frame by overtightening the seat collar, assuming you have a 27.2mm seatpost in there.

What Kind of Derailleur Does The Highball Use?

The carbon fiber Highballs (both 27.5 and 29-inch versions) use a high direct-mount, bottom pull front derailleur. The aluminum version uses a 34.9mm clamp-on bottom swing/top pull front derailleur.

What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

This bike uses an integrated headset with drop-in bearings and molded-in bearing races. The SHIS measurement is IS41 (upper) and IS52 (lower).

What size rear hub do I need?

This bike uses a 142x12 through-axle rear hub, and includes a DT RWS axle.

What size seat collar do I need?

Bikes with a 27.2mm seatpost require a 31.8mm seat collar.

What size seatpost do I need?

This bike uses a 27.2mm seatpost.  Always ensure it is inserted a minimum of 4" (100mm)

What's the largest chainring I can use on the HIghball?

If you want to use a single-chainring drivetrain on our new Highball, a maximum of a 36-tooth ring is your best bet. A 38-tooth ring will fit, but it's very tight. Any double-chainring drivetrain will work; we've checked a 42/30 combo, and it's no problem at all.
