Sea Otter Classic 2019

Sea Otter Classic Photo Recap

April 16 — 2019 | Santa Cruz, CA

You know racing season is nigh when Sea Otter shows up on the calendar—high-fives, friends, racing, beverages, and the special combination of wind/sunburns that four days at Laguna Seca inevitably delivers.

Danny, Greg, Loris, and Luca keeping the fans stoked.

The Syndicate puzzle factory was open to the public

Alongside the entire Syndicate team, Santa Cruz and Juliana set up shop, and by Thursday morning the coffee was flowing on one side of the tent while Dougie Fresh, Jason Marsh, and PA turned wrenches on a set of three freshly painted Syndicate bikes on the other side. Danny MacAskill and his Drop and Roll crew were on hand and hung out until the long line of autograph and selfie-seekers all got what they came for.

Coffee, great people, good times, and bikes from both Juliana and Santa Cruz.

Racing kicked off on Friday and continued through the weekend. Dual slalom was stacked with talent from Santa Cruz HQ and beyond with the Syndicate, Santa Cruz-SRAM Enduro Team’s Iago Garay, and Dumpster Fire Racing’s Mitch Ropelato all qualifying into the finals. Mitch kept it pinned (and upright) heat after heat in the Dual Slalom and claimed his third victory in three years.

Three in a row for Mitch Ropelato at the Sea Otter Dual Slalom.

The final stretch: make or break.

Across the valley, Greg, Loris, Peaty, Luca, and Luca’s brother Walker took on the fast, sandy, and pedal-heavy Downhill. Greg and Peaty opted for V10’s, Loris and Luca Megatowers, and for Walker, a Hightower borrowed from the father-Shaw. Walker set the time to beat and would ultimately climb to the top of the box, winning not only the sibling battle, but besting Puzzler nation in the process. Walker kept the check, but dad got the big bottle of Sierra Nevada Pale, and everyone went home happy.

Another great weekend at the Otter in the books. Sea you next year.
