Overview

Hightower has the versatility to deal with whatever appears on the horizon.  Running either proven 29" wheels or the new monster-truck 27.5”+ standard, Hightower seamlessly adapts to the trails and style you ride, no matter where you are in the world.

So the big question, 27.5+ or 29?

29
If straight line speed, rallying through rock gardens and sprinting out of turns is your bag, then 29” wheels are the big ticket. Upgrade to carbon rims and you have a precision instrument on your hands.

27.5+
When conditions get loose and the traction just ain’t there, you’ll want to reach for bigger tires. 27.5+ elevates Hightower to a whole different level, enabling you to rise above the pow, rail the soft spots and carry momentum where standard tires bog down.

No matter what size you run, geometry remains optimized thanks to a neat little “High/Low” setting on the upper link that flips to adjust bottom bracket height*.  Hightower’s 67° head angle, longer reach and trim chain stays combine to create an altogether different class of dreadnought in any configuration.  Meanwhile, 150mm of seat dropper, a water bottle mount, and internal routing reflect an armada of killer details.

135mm of VPP® travel is reinforced by a 148 rear axle spacing and the kind of Nomad-style linkage arrangement and swingarm design we reserve for the heaviest hitters in our model line up.  The resulting package leaves Hightower standing head and shoulders above anything else out there.

By using a slightly-less-expensive carbon fiber, we were able to put performance within reach of more riders than ever before, lifting the race pace of World Cup athletes and privateers alike. The stiffness, durability, and strength are identical between the two materials, but the C-level carbon weighs in at about 230 grams more than the top-end, CC carbon

*Please note: 140mm fork comes standard on the 29” kits, and is exchanged for a 150mm version on the 27+ builds to keep the 67° head angle consistent.

This CC-level carbon frame is every bit as stiff and strong as our C-level frame, but weighs about 230 grams less, due to the use of some lighter, stronger, and more expensive carbon fiber. Using this material in key places allowed us to use less material overall, which is what shaves off half a pound from the frame.

*Please note: 140mm fork comes standard on the 29” kits, and is exchanged for a 150mm version on the 27+ builds to keep the 67° head angle consistent.

F.A.Q.

Can I mount a front derailleur?

No, this bike is not compatible with a front derailleur.  Single ring only!

Is the 148x12 derailleur hanger the same as the 142x12 hanger?

No, it's not. We had to make a new derailleur hanger to go with the new dropout. They look similar, but the easiest way to tell them apart is the finish. Our 142x12mm hangers have a bead-blasted finish, while the 148x12mm hangers have a smooth, machined finish.

What Happens if I run a 150mm Fork with 29" Wheels?

If you keep your fork at 150mm when swapping from 27.5+ tires to 29" tires, it will result in a bottom bracket height increase of 3.4mm, and your head angle and seat angle will get 0.4 degrees slacker.

What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

This bike uses an integrated headset with drop-in bearings and molded-in bearing races. The SHIS measurement is IS41 (upper) and IS52 (lower).

What size bottom bracket shell does this bike use?

We use a standard 73mm threaded BB. Nearly any crank on the market (besides BB30 cranks) will fit.

What size seatpost do I need?

This bike uses a 31.6mm seatpost.  Always ensure it is inserted into the frame a minimum of 4" (100mm).

What's the Biggest 27.5+ Tire I Can Fit?

2.8in tires fit really nicely, and 3.0s will fit, but they can be a bit tight. If you have a lower-profile tire, and don't see a lot of mud, you can definitely run a 3.0. If you're looking for more aggressive rubber, or ride in muddy conditions regularly, you'll want to stick to 2.8s.

What's With The Chip?

The reversible chip at the shock mount is designed to maintain the frame's geometry when swapping between standard 29-inch tires and 27.5+ tires. The "Low" setting is designed for 29er use, and the "High" setting for 27.5+. While 27.5+ tires have a diameter that's similar to the 29er tire, it's not quite equal, so reversing the chip is a must to maintain the handling characteristics.

Flipping the chip to "High" without swapping to 27.5+ tires results in an increase of 3.1mm to bottom bracket height, and an increase of 0.25 degrees to your head and seat angles.
