no, not THAT kind of big wheel...

no, not THAT kind of big wheel...

Ever since the 29″ wheel rolled over the horizon in 1999, we’ve had people asking us to build 29″ bikes. At first, we were reluctant to go there because the infrastructure to build what we believed was a halfway decent mountain bike was nonexistent. There was only one tire available at first, and a relatively non aggressive tread pattern at that, the very few suspension forks available were abysmal, and wheels were not much more than touring rims and crossed fingers. After a few years, the quality of that infrastructure improved dramatically, and the number of people asking for 29″ wheel bikes grew.

Meanwhile, we’ve been involved in a very intensive revamp of our entire line of bikes. First, starting in 2006, all our single pivot models were redesigned. Then, immediately on the heels of that, we launched our next generation VPP bikes, starting with the Blur LT, followed by the Nomad and culminating with this year’s spring introduction of the Driver 8 and our new carbon fiber bikes. There was also a new V-10 in there somewhere, and a new Chameleon, and a new Jackal, and the Stigmata ‘cross bike. Bear in mind that our entire engineering department is six guys, and they do all the design, prototype building, machining and fabrication, as well as ALL our testing (and we test a hell of a lot more stuff than you can imagine), in-house. We’ve been pinned.

But we’ve also been thinking a lot about 29ers. A fistful of workers here ride and race them, our sales manager has been screaming for them, not to mention there’s this guy who posts on mtbr.com all the time who just won’t quit it with the email guilt trips. Those factors (well, maybe not the guy on mtbr.com so much. Yes, we mean YOU, davidcopperfield…) led us to spend a lot of time over the last year and a half building and testing and refining various big wheel mules.

Big wheels have some really cool attributes, as well as some pretty unique design challenges. Given how much of a hard-on we collectively have for chassis stiffness, wheel flex and frame flex resulting from long frame tubes being torqued by big wheels were concerns for us. So was the challenge of packaging some decent suspension into a bike and still having a manageable chainstay and wheelbase length. There were also some unexpected differences in the balance of pedaling performance, acceleration and bump absorption that needed more consideration than we were used to with our current bikes.

Anyway, we did a ton of research, ended up with something we’re really stoked about, and we’re going to make a 29er. It’ll be out before Interbike, fingers crossed. It’ll have VPP suspension. It’ll weigh a whole lot less than some other bikes of similar configuration. It’ll have kickass chassis stiffness, we promise you that.

Some of you might say it’s about time. Some might see it as jumping onto the bandwagon. We’re thinking more along the lines of hijacking the damn bandwagon. This bike is gonna rule, and for those of you who’ve been holding your breath, it’ll be worth every second of the wait. Keep watching this space, and we’ll fill in details as we get closer to the launch.

  1. [...] … and will be offering a VPP 29er. [...]

  2. If you build it, he will come.

  3. If a 29er was made by Santa Cruz – I’d be interested for sure!

I’d not be the only one too ;) I’m looking forward to how these ideas “evolve”.

  4. Yep, hopped on that bandwagon.

While you’re at it, make a fix and pickup some knickers and a Rhasta Timbuk2 bag.

I have so much love for SC, its disappointing you’re bringing a poseur into the family.

  5. I ride a 29er HT now, but my favorite bike of all time (due to nostalgia as much as anything) was a 1998 Santa Cruz Heckler. I was poor and in college and I got it by chance from a friend who was also an SC Rep. If Santa Cruz makes a FS 29er with stand over clearance for my short ass, (and orange like my old Heckler would also be a big motivational factor) I promise I will buy one.

  6. About time, I have been a fan of your bikes for over a decade, and cannot wait to see your 29er!

  7. Makes good sense from a business standpoint. Those of us who ride SC need this company to stay competitive in order to remain on the cutting edge. If SC feels that adding a 29 model to the line will help in that capacity, I’m behind it. I’ll just shake my head when I see it on the trail.

  8. [...] was revealed yesterday in a post from Santa Cruz’s blog that the long time 29″er hold out is working on a 29″er project due to be unveiled [...]

  9. Awesome, make it carbon and you will rule the world !!!! Come in with about 110mm at about 5 lbs for the Blur Carbon 29.

Also, while you are at it, go ahead and do the tiny tweaks required to make the Blur Carbon 650b rear wheel compatible. (You should have done that in the first place.)

  10. I am SUPER stoked to read this!! This is what I’ve been wishing and waiting for! All other FS 29ers are either heavy, flexy, or a suspension design that can’t compete with VPP. If the Carbon Blur is any indication, this will be so wicked. I will be anxiously awaiting the unveiling.

  11. I think this is good news, nothing “poseurish” about the big-wheel phenomenon. People tend to forget the randomness with which MTB’s ended up with 26″ wheels in the first place. Personally I’d love to see you do a race-worthy hard-tail also…

  12. I almost cried when I sold my Blur. I’m on big wheels now.
If there is Blur 29er then I’m coming back. Their are a lot of nice bikes
Out there but nothing rides like Blur!

  13. Rather have 650B!!! Screw the 29er Shia! :)

  14. My Niner RIP9 better be the performance standard that you are attempting to exceed!
This is quite an about-face from Santa Cruz’ previous statement that they are not interested in, nor are they planning to build, 29er bikes.
I’ll forgive the pole vault onto the bandwagon if the 29er produced by Santa Cruz can give me the kind of smiles and trail-attacking capability that my RIP9 does.

  15. I want a Blur LT or Carbon Nomad as 29ers. No more Ht or short travel 29ers. Doing that SC will give an impression that 29ers can only be XC-ish and not AM/FR
Give us a big hucking machine just like Lunchbox with 6″ or Niner Wide Flat Open9

  16. david, do you mind if i ask what you do for your day job? i only ask because i was talking to the carpenter who is fixing a wall at my house the other day, and i said: “hey, dude, i know you’ve been working on houses for like 30 years, but have you ever thought about using something other than 2×6 studs for this wall? i mean, you could go to a 3×6, and totally end up with a way stronger house! then, you could put them 19 inches apart instead of 16 inches, and you’d end up saving some weight, which could be helpful in an earthquake. and then, i saw this documentary once about how ants can make their anthills out of what is basically vomit and excrement, and wouldn’t it be totally cool if we could build houses like that? we’d be able to party all the time and eat junk food and just barf up homes that would’ve made gaudi proud!”

and he just kinda stared blankly at me for a while, then said “no. that’s stupid…”

but i think i’m totally onto something.

  17. Thx dark lord. You made it plain clear to me. sorry I ever thought about 29ers, they are just stupid junk food excrement. 26ers word flawlessly so why change that?
Living in caves worked flawlessly- why people ventured to change that?

There will always be naysayers whenever there is a new idea. These people remind me of roadies back in the day who said mountain bikes are stupid, XC racers who said suspension bikes and downhill riding was stupid, and skiers who said snowboards were stupid- until they tried one, and gave up skiing. If the naysayers ruled the world, bicycles would certainly not exist, and we would all still be living in caves, afraid to go out into the world and try something new.

  18. DC, don’t give up the dream yet, man! i just wanted to know what you do for a living…

  20. PLEASE don’t call this bike the “Blur 29.”

  21. The big & tall dudes in the room want an XXL frame size with a 25.5″ ETT, a super-low leverage ratio (2.25:1 or lower), and compatibility with the new 120mm thru-axle forks.

Oh, and we also want it to be the stiffest full suspension 29er frame on the planet.

Not too much to ask, is it?

  22. Blur 29 is a perfect name. Just make sure you cater for smaller riders too please, we ride 29ers as well :-)

  23. Hi, good post. I have been woondering about this issue,so thanks for posting. I’ll definitely be coming back to your site.
